The Three Most Expensive Stadiums in the NFL

NFL

The NFL is renowned not only for its high-octane games but also for its state-of-the-art stadiums, which represent the pinnacle of modern architecture and engineering. With a new season just around the corner, excitement is reaching a fever pitch as to who will walk out of Ceasers Superdome in New Orleans with the Lombardi next February. Many are tipping the Kansas City Chiefs for glory once more.

Led by the mercurial Patrick Mahomes, the Chiefs picked up a second straight championship last term when they downed the San Francisco 49ers at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas just over three months ago. Now, they have a shot at immortality by becoming the first team in history to complete the elusive three-peat. And the bookies certainly fancy their chances.

Fanatics Sportsbook has taken advantage of the recent online betting boom in the States and has become a major player in the industry. Don’t just take our word for it. You can see Tom Jacobs’ review here to find out more about what exactly makes the website so popular. Fanatics have made the Chiefs a +600 favorite to retain the Lombardi next year and cement their status as perhaps the greatest dynasty of all time.

While their Arrowhead Stadium isn’t featured on this list, there are plenty of stadiums in the United States that cost the proverbial arm-and-a-leg to construct. Here are the three most expensive in the NFL.

SoFi Stadium

Inglewood, California’s SoFi Stadium is the most expensive stadium ever constructed, either stateside or anywhere else, costing a whopping $5.5 billion to build. Home to both the Los Angeles Rams and the Los Angeles Chargers, this magnificent stadium opened its doors in September 2020 and has hosted plenty of marquee events in the four years since. SoFi hosted Super Bowl LVI back in 2022, an event that saw the Rams reign supreme on home turf with a last-gasp victory against the Cincinnati Bengals.

The following year, WrestleMania 39 was hosted at the stadium and helped the blockbuster event become the highest-grossing ever. There, the 80,000+ fans in attendance saw former Undisputed WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns successfully defend his title against challenger Cody Rhodes.

The stadium features a massive, oval-shaped video board called the “Infinity Screen,” which hangs from the roof and offers fans crystal-clear views from any angle. The venue also includes a transparent roof, allowing natural light to flood the interior while protecting spectators from the elements.

Allegiant Stadium

Situated in Paradise, Nevada, Allegiant Stadium played a crucial role in taking the Raiders from their long-term home in Oakland to their new home in Sin City. Completed in July 2020, this $1.9 billion venue features a sleek, black exterior and a dome-like structure that stands out against the backdrop of the Las Vegas skyline. It can accommodate up to 65,000 spectators, with expandable seating for larger events such as the Super Bowl and WrestleMania, with the former being held back in February and the latter taking place next April.

The Stadium includes a retractable field tray that allows natural grass to grow outside and be rolled in for game days, ensuring optimal playing conditions. One of the standout features is its massive lanai doors on the north side, which open to provide a stunning view of the iconic Strip.

With an impressive stadium under their belt, all that remains is for the Raiders to build a roster worthy of playing in it.

MetLife Stadium

Despite technically being located in New Jersey, MetLife Stadium is the home of both the New York Gants and the New York Jets. Coming in at a mighty $1.7 billion, it was the most expensive stadium in the world at the time of its completion back in 2010.

With a seating capacity of 82,500, the Stadium is one of the largest in the NFL. It is designed to be neutral, with the ability to change colors and branding depending on which team is playing. It features four massive HD video displays and over 2,200 HDTV monitors throughout the venue, ensuring fans don’t miss a moment of the action.

The stadium has twice hosted WrestleMania and it was the site of the most lopsided Super Bowl in history when the Seattle Seahawks demolished Peyton Manning’s Denver Broncos by a score of 43 points to 8 back in 2013. It will also host the next FIFA World Cup final in 2026, despite facing plenty of competition from other stadiums across not only the US, but also Canada and Mexico.
